What are Webtoons?

Before I recommend some webtoons, some of you might be wondering what are WEBTOONS? You might be seeing this category on manga hosting sites and yet, you don’t have the idea of what is it really. So here and let me explain.

WEBTOONS is actually an abbreviation of “website cartoons.” Some people may refer to it as manhwa(s) since it’s made by Koreans but for narrowing purposes, the term ‘webtoons’ should be used. They differ in manhwa and manga in many ways. First, the panel format is different. Within one horizontal section, the maximum number of panel is 3 (based from what I observed).

When this category was still new to the industry, they came into long strips of images which will require you to zoom-in and to conduct long scrolls for the sake of reading. The editors might have observed that it is inconvenient to use (the reason why I stopped reading Crepuscule) this is why currently, they have divided that long strips into sections making it easier to read.

Most of all, the thing I like the most about webtoons is its completely-colored drawings. Yeah, you’ve read it right! If you have experienced reading one, this is the foremost characteristic you will notice. I think this is a great advantage since it is really eye-catching! In addition, most of the artists are really…great in drawing. You won’t be disappointed by their hot bishounens and bishoujo! Unfortunately, webtoons are licensed under reading sites which will require users to read chapters in exchange for a payment. On cases like this, you need not to worry that much since our internet community had turned into a pirating community! This is the sole reason why you can still read it on well-known reading sites. There were cases when the hosting sites shut down, and as a result, released were interrupted. But then again no need to worry since the author will surely find another site where he/she can continue updating.
